ON THE DAY
What will happen on the day?
At the BCC we understand that having your son circumcised can be an emotional and stressful time.
Our aim is to support you throughout the whole process and to help you feel as reassured as possible. Our team are happy to answer any questions you may have before, during or after the procedure.
- You will be welcomed in by our friendly reception team.
- Child and parent identification documentation will be checked (see FAQs).
- You will be given the consent form to read carefully. A copy of this will have been sent to you via email prior to the appointment. Both parents need to consent for the procedure to be performed (see FAQs).
- The doctor will explain the procedure and answer any questions you may have.
- The doctor will examine your son to ensure there are no medical reasons for not performing the procedure (see FAQs – contraindications)
- Your child’s legs will be restrained (please see our Restraining Policy).
- The foreskin will be marked to ensure the correct amount of skin is removed.
- A local anaesthetic (Lidocaine 1%) will be injected around the base of the penis. This may cause your son to cry. The anaesthetic is effective within 1-2 minutes and will numb the penis, after which your son will not feel any pain. Pressure and movement may still be felt, which may cause your son to cry. The anaesthetic effect usually lasts 1-2 hours.
- The area will be cleaned using a dermatologically safe antiseptic.
- The skin will be tested to make sure it is numb before the procedure is commenced.
- The circumcision will be performed using the Plastibell (Ring) technique (see FAQs & Procedure Information Leaflet).
- The doctor will review your son after a short while to ensure there is no bleeding and the urinary opening is clear.
- You will be advised on the nappy change technique and pain relief for your child.
- You will be given verbal and written aftercare information.
- Emergency contact details information will be provided.
- You will remain in the surgery until we are happy it is safe for you to be discharged.
- A letter will be given for you to hand in to your GP to update your son’s medical records.

We are extremely happy with the service that we received. We can’t thank doctor Aziz and his nurse enough. They were very professional. As first time parents we were very nervous about the whole procedure, however, Dr Aziz and his nurse put our mind at ease. Any questions or concerns that we had post surgery were answered on the same day via what’s app. The after care was just as good as the procedure itself. My son healed very well. I was extremely happy with the way the staff dealt with my son. Their communication skills were excellent, they explained the procedure really well as well as the after care process. Hygiene maintenance was great, the bed was cleaned before and after use, the staff washed their hands each time they were required to. Had a call to see how my son was doing a couple of days after the circumcision. Anytime we contacted them to ask questions or gain advice they provided this straight away. Brilliant staff deliver an outstanding service. Highly recommend them.
